So as summer approaches, it’s time to walk the vineyards with the vineyard managers and owners who farm this impeccable fruit and start to see what the year will present.
My first stop was up in the El Dorado AVA to meet with Grayson Hartley at David Girard Vineyards. This is my third year working with Grayson and this vineyard. This is where I come for Viognier, Grenache (with a bit of Mouvedre), and this year I’m adding Touriga Nacional. There is a very small block of it planted and it seems like a perfect fit for Rose. Lots of wonderful flavors with good acidity. Verasion was just starting and the vineyard and fruit looked great.
My next stop was to Las Madres Vineyard in the Carneros AVA of Sonoma. Due to the cooler climate this fruit is always the last picked for Lois Rae. All indications are this should be an excellent growing season with the vineyard and fruit looking healthy.
